Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the 112% capture beat everyone will headline, it's that MPC is sitting on $7.8B of cash (up from $2.2B) while buybacks only grew to $2.5B, and management dodged the direct question on a buyback ceiling with the same 'timing matters' language they used last quarter. The obvious headline, record capture and utilization, is real, but management itself undercut the full-year read-through by flagging Q3 margin softening and a 'pullback in the jet to diesel spread' rather than raising expectations off a 108% first-half capture number. The binding constraint here isn't demand or refining capacity, it's capital allocation discipline and confidence in cycle durability: 'we are pulling on the bank, and that is not sustainable' on renewable diesel is the most honest line on the call, and it should make you ask the same question about the overall capture environment. My view changes if Q3 buybacks jump meaningfully above $2.5B despite the cash build, or if management puts a hard number on full-year capture guidance next quarter instead of seasonal hedging.

The 30-second version

  • Cash is piling up faster than buybacks can absorb it, and renewable diesel just admitted it's running on borrowed time
  • Capture hit 112% and the street will call this a blowout, but management quietly walked back full-year confidence
  • The buyback ceiling question got dodged for the second straight quarter
