Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: MPC's derivative hedging program cost them $500M in Q1, completely offsetting their geopolitical windfall advantage. While the market celebrates Iran supply disruptions helping cracks, MPC's own risk management created a massive headwind they didn't properly warn about. The real constraint isn't refining capacity or crude access - it's their inability to fully capture crack volatility due to hedging that forces timing mismatches. Rick Hessling's boast that 'our capture would have been in excess of 100% this quarter' without derivatives shows the operational team is executing, but financial engineering is getting in the way. My view changes if Q2 capture hits 105%+ as derivatives unwind - that would prove the hedging drag was temporary noise, not a structural limitation on their volatility capture.

The 30-second version

  • SLEEPER STORY: Geopolitical windfall isn't being fully captured - derivative hedging cost them $500M in Q1
  • Commercial execution is real but fragile - capture would have exceeded 100% without two big headwinds
  • Suspiciously perfect turnaround timing - they pulled forward 40% of annual maintenance into Q1
