Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Modine has a classic growth company blowup brewing: they staffed up for massive growth that didn't materialize, burning 450-550 bps of margin on stranded labor costs while revenue actually declined sequentially. The Street sees 'supply chain issues' but I see execution failure; when your CEO takes over a division after the head mysteriously quits, you don't have a parts problem, you have a people problem. The binding constraint isn't component availability, it's their ability to execute at scale, evidenced by June allegedly returning to 'normal' margins but Mick admitting 'I'm not tracking' July. Management claims 'these margin pressures are a transitional timing issue, not a structural one' but negative FCF while claiming 28% growth is absolutely structural. My view changes if Q2 actually delivers the promised $100M sequential revenue increase with 19-20% margins, but I'm betting they guide down by Q3.

The 30-second version

  • Supply chain constraints are actually LABOR inefficiencies masked as parts shortage
  • Record backlog means nothing when you can't produce
  • CEO taking over data center business after head resigned is NOT normal
