Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't AI hype, it's that MIS margin just broke its multi-year expansion streak, falling 80bps yoy to 64.4% while management recycled the same 'discipline' and 'operating leverage' language it used last quarter when the trend was the opposite direction. The obvious headline is a resilient beat-and-reaffirm quarter with guidance maintained across the board, but strip away the framing and MIS actually missed its own Q3 revenue guide (guided low single digit growth, delivered -1%), banking and lending ARR decelerated, and the $300-350M restructuring savings target from last quarter got zero mention. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's conversion and disclosure discipline: management admits they're 'a little bit behind' migrating KYC customers to MaxSight, and AI/MCP paying customers are reported only as 'more than doubled' with zero base number. Rob Fauber's own words give it away: 'we've got to start by looking at adoption and usage... over time, we will see more and more revenue', a multi-quarter deferral dressed up as patience. My view changes if next quarter they disclose an actual dollar or ARR figure tied to MCP/AI access, restate the FY FCF range explicitly, or if MIS margin recovers its yoy expansion; absent that, this is decelerating internals papered over by reaffirmed headline guidance.

The 30-second version

  • MIS margin just broke its multi-year expansion streak, and nobody's pricing that in
  • Beat-and-reaffirm headline masks MIS revenue actually missing its own Q3 guide
  • AI monetization confidence quietly downgraded, and the restructuring savings target vanished
