Bottom line
The sleeper story is aerospace & defense quietly became 18% of revenue with Microchip embedded in everything from tanks to missiles, just as U.S. defense hits trillion-dollar budget and NATO triples spending. The obvious revenue bottom call is real but mechanical - it's inventory math, not demand recovery. The binding constraint is factory utilization: they've cut production so aggressively that 85% of incremental revenue falls straight to profit. Sanghi's money quote: 'current rules are actually incentivizing moving product out of U.S., which is opposite of what they intended' as they shift mask sets to Taiwan. My view changes if the defense revenue concentration proves cyclical rather than structural, or if inventory reduction stalls above 200 days.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: Aerospace & defense just became 18% of revenue (up from 11%), and Microchip is in literally everything
  • Bottom finally called after three years, but it's built on a 'trifecta' of inventory math, not demand
  • The China strategy just imploded due to rule changes, and they're moving production OUT of U.S. to avoid tariffs
