Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the 1.2GW frontier AI lab deal, it's that Liberty burned through 79% of its cash in two quarters, from $559M to $119M, and nearly doubled net debt to $1.2B, funding pre-revenue power deposits, while three previously-headlined initiatives (Slurry, DigiPrime Canada, LWC) vanished from the script entirely. The obvious headline, a landmark 1.2GW power agreement, is real but still unsigned: management admitted the ESA is only in 'final legal drafting' with the prepayment amount undisclosed beyond 'hundreds of millions'. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's financing sequencing: project-level SPV financing doesn't launch until early 2027, so the corporate balance sheet is carrying the entire pre-ESA capital burden alone. My view changes if the prepayment lands as promised in Q4 with a disclosed dollar figure and the first ESA is actually executed by December as targeted; if either slips, the cash story becomes the dominant narrative next quarter, not the GW count.

The 30-second version

  • Cash is draining fast while the power story grabs headlines
  • Net loss of $39M isn't operational, it's mark-to-market noise, but the swing itself is a tell
  • Three Q2 operating metrics vanished without explanation: Slurry, DigiPrime Canada, and LWC
