Bottom line
The sleeper story is that LARK's real loan book stopped growing this quarter, period-end gross loans were flat, and management quietly pivoted the headline metric to average balances (+10% annualized) to paper over it, a reversal from Q2's genuine period-end 'record high'. The obvious headline, a clean credit quarter with NPLs down $7M and efficiency improving to 60.7%, is really just the cleanup of one large, previously-flagged commercial credit, not a broad-based improvement, and it came with a coverage-ratio decline (allowance fell to 1.10% from 1.23%) that nobody questioned because zero analysts submitted questions this quarter. The binding constraint here is funding quality and capital transparency: deposit growth is now being carried by brokered money instead of the branch-network initiative management promised last quarter, and capital ratios, disclosed with precision in Q2 (9.2% leverage, 13.6% total RBC), were reduced to the vague assurance that ratios 'exceed the regulatory levels considered well capitalized'. My view changes if Q4 shows period-end loan growth resume on its own terms (not averages), capital ratios are re-disclosed with specific figures, and brokered deposit reliance declines as the stated branch initiative actually shows up in the numbers.

The 30-second version

  • Loan growth is now 100% an averaging trick
  • Clean credit quarter, but it's a one-off cleanup, not a trend
  • Capital ratio disclosure quietly disappeared, and zero analysts even noticed
