Bottom line
The sleeper story is credit, not earnings: NPLs nearly doubled sequentially to $13.1M while the dollar allowance barely moved, pushing coverage from roughly 121% to roughly 97% , even as management insists, almost defensively, that 'believe it or not, the allowance remains appropriate' . The obvious headline, record revenue of $19.2M and EPS of $0.88 , is real but is being driven by gain-on-sale volume and favorable investment reinvestment yields, not organic loan growth, which actually averaged down $3.2 million for the quarter . The binding constraint here isn't demand, it's credit discipline and talent: management openly cites competition 'not only for customer relationships, but also for talent' as the real friction point, while the fraud matter from a non-executive officer continues to bleed into professional fees for a second straight quarter with no disclosed insurance recovery . My view changes if Q3 shows the allowance-to-NPL coverage ratio rebuilding meaningfully above 100% and the fraud-related expense line finally disappears from the non-interest expense walk.

The 30-second version

  • The 'one-time' fraud charge isn't one-time anymore
  • Record EPS of $0.88 masks a credit book that's quietly cracking
  • Growth confidence downgraded, NIM guidance softened from 'expanded' to 'hold on'
