Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the splashy $195M data center order, it's that the M&A algorithm, long IR's most reliable compounding lever, just got quietly revised down from the implied cycle pace to 200-300bps for 2026 , with management calling it 'transaction timing' rather than acknowledging it diverges from where they said they stood just last quarter. The obvious headline is beat-and-raise with 18% organic order growth, but strip out the one named order and underlying orders grew high single digits , while the EPS raise is substantially a tax-rate story (17% in Q3, 20% FY guide) and the free cash flow headline is meaningfully inflated by ILC Dover legal recoveries . The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's margin conversion: EBITDA guidance held flat and is now expected at the bottom half of the range even as revenue guidance rose . Most revealing quote: when asked directly about October order trends, after volunteering a specific July number unprompted last quarter, management said simply 'Not commenting on October...things continue to be healthy' , the kind of refusal to quantify that often shows up right before guidance gets walked back. My view changes if Q4 ITS margins actually deliver the guided ~100bps sequential step and M&A reaccelerates to a visible 400bps+ run rate in early 2027; until then, this is a tax-rate-and-litigation-recovery beat wrapped in a demand narrative.

The 30-second version

  • The M&A flywheel quietly stalled and nobody asked the follow-up
  • Headline beat is a tax rate and legal settlement story, not an operating story
  • They stopped giving a number when asked for one
