Bottom line
The sleeper story is that IBM's vaunted software transformation is actually 20% exposed to legacy ELA cycles that just proved they can crater without warning. Yes, they missed badly, but the 1/3 of deals already recovered suggests this was execution failure, not macro. The binding constraint is their Enterprise License Agreement model that ties critical software to CapEx cycles they can't predict or control. Arvind admitted it: 'tens of large deals failed to close on the timelines we expected.' My view changes if they break out organic software growth and it exceeds 5% for two consecutive quarters.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: IBM's software ELA business is melting down while management distracts with storage growth
  • The obvious miss gets worse when you realize 1/3 of slipped deals already closed in July
  • Management stopped disclosing software organic growth and DSO while introducing vague 'recurring revenue' at 80%
