Bottom line
The sleeper story is GLW built a massive solar wafer facility on temporary power and water because they couldn't wait for utilities, and now they're eating a $30M extended shutdown to fix it, classic Corning overreach. Yes, they secured $18B in hyperscaler commitments, but Wendell admitted 'if we could make more, we could sell more,' meaning they're already capacity-constrained before the ink is dry. The binding constraint is operational execution, not demand; they have infinite demand but can't convert it efficiently, as evidenced by solar's pathetic $7M profit on $370M revenue. 'Our ramp is running behind our ambitious plans' might be the most honest thing Weeks has said in years. My view changes if Q3 solar margins hit 15%+ and FCF recovers above $500M, proving they can actually execute on this demand.

The 30-second version

  • Solar wafer disaster is the real story: $30M extended shutdown, permanent power still not installed, and they built a massive facility on TEMPORARY utilities
  • Three hyperscaler deals totaling ~$18B secured, but capacity expansions required across ALL optical operations
  • Display volume guidance quietly walked back while memory cost concerns suddenly appear
