Bottom line
The real story isn't Display recovery, it's that Corning just pushed through 'the most significant price increase in 30 years' in Optical while volumes tanked, proving they have more pricing power than anyone realizes in fiber/cable. Yes, Display is finally recovering after another false start, but the binding constraint is now free cash flow generation: negative $383M in Q1 with broken inventory promises suggests working capital is severely strained. Wendell's quote about taking customer deployment promises 'with a grain of salt' reveals unusual management skepticism about their own recovery narrative. My view changes if they actually deliver positive FCF in Q2 as promised, but the inventory head-fake makes me doubt their working capital management.

The 30-second version

  • Optical Communications pricing power is the sleeper story; successfully pushed through historically massive price increases while volume tanked
  • Display recovery narrative is real but China disruption pushed it back another quarter
  • Free cash flow turned deeply negative at -$383M while management quietly walked back inventory reduction promises
