Bottom line
The sleeper story is that this quarter's FCF guidance raise to $16-17B is a working-capital story, not an earnings story, with $5.3B of the $5.4B Q3 free cash flow coming from customer down payments that will need to be delivered against over the next several years. The obvious headline, a 96% orders beat, ~$200B backlog, and blowout 21.4% power margins, is real and impressive, but the binding constraint going forward isn't demand, it's booking cadence normalization: management itself guided that 2027's quarterly GW signings will look more like the slower back half of 2026 than the torrid 20 GW/quarter pace of early 2026. Scott Strazik's own words on Trench are the tell: 'we aren't in a position now, as we did with Prolec, that on day one, we wanted to quantify revenue synergy', an admission that this $9B deal is being sold on vision and vertical integration logic rather than hard numbers. My view changes if the January call either restores the data-center entitlement math with evidence of margin accretion, or shows FY27 FCF holding up once this quarter's down-payment tailwind reverses.

The 30-second version

  • FCF guidance just got raised by $4.5B in one quarter, and almost none of it is earnings
  • Backlog hit ~$200B and margins ripped, but the SRA-to-order conversion cadence is quietly slowing
  • The data center entitlement math and the fuel cell story both vanished from the call
