Bottom line
The sleeper story is the quiet unwind of Freeport's leach technology narrative: last quarter's 'targeted demonstration piles already in the portfolio' is this quarter's 'we have not yet tested in the field', and the 'long term path to 800 million pounds' is now just 'aspirational' with nothing in the forecast. The headline (net income up 80%+ YoY, Grasberg at 67%) is real, but the binding constraint is weather, labor and capex inflation, not demand, evidenced by a second straight 2027 CapEx hike to $5.2B alongside trimmed 2026/2027 volume guidance. The most revealing line of the call: "We're not at a point where we can give guidance" on the 800M lb target, paired with "this is a test" on the very additive the entire America's Copper Champion thesis depends on. My view changes if Freeport volunteers hard Gen-2 field data and a specific go/no-go date next quarter rather than continuing to push the timeline into 2027 and beyond.

The 30-second version

  • The leach 'breakthrough' story quietly lost a year and its confidence level
  • Headline beat is real (net income +80% YoY), but the binding constraint is water, labor and capex inflation, not demand
  • Two cost/return metrics quietly disappeared, and the AI-copper narrative got softer language
