Bottom line
The sleeper story is Diamondback's stealth inventory expansion - building a 20-year, 900-location Barnett position without dilution while peers burned cash chasing deals. The obvious headline about macro resilience misses the bigger point: they've cracked the code on capital-efficient resource expansion that extends runway without compromising returns. The binding constraint isn't inventory or capital access - it's their own discipline to not chase growth into oversupply, which is exactly the right constraint to have. As Kaes put it: 'We didn't just fall into this position, we had to earn it acre by acre.' My view changes if Barnett well costs don't reach the $800/ft target or if they break discipline and accelerate activity before the green light.
