Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the loan growth inflection everyone will write about tomorrow, it's that Equity funded that growth with borrowings while deposits shrank 2.2% and the noninterest-bearing mix fell to 18.7% from 20.2%, and that last quarter's quantified AI story (15% Anthropic, 75% Copilot, six bots) vanished into 'I don't have clear line of sight today' the moment an analyst asked for the next data point. The obvious headline, record $379M production and the first total loan increase since the acquisitions closed, is real, but the binding constraint is funding cost and mix, not loan demand: NIM missed its own guided range at 4.20% against 4.25%-4.35%, and management reissued the same unmet range for Q4 without explanation. Chris Navratil's own words capture the posture best: 'I don't have clear line of sight today to give you kind of the specifics', which is a notable step down from last quarter's precise percentages. My view changes if Q4 NIM actually lands inside 4.25%-4.35% ex-Lincoln and if management re-quantifies AI adoption metrics on the next call; if both happen, this quarter's softness was noise. If NIM misses again and AI stays vague, the credibility gap becomes the story.

The 30-second version

  • The AI story that had hard numbers last quarter now has none
  • Organic loan growth is real, but it's being funded by borrowings, not deposits
  • NIM missed its own guided range, and nobody addressed it directly
