Bottom line
The market will cheer the EPS beat and the 16.1% core ROATCE, but the real story is that legacy organic loan growth is running at just 3-4% annualized, well under the reiterated mid-single-digit target, while the headline 20% asset growth is 100% Frontier-driven. The binding constraint here isn't demand, it's integration bandwidth: management is simultaneously repricing $100M of Frontier deposits-, chasing a one-quarter-late cost-save target, and explaining away a near-doubling of nonaccruals as 'a merger process issue, not a credit issue' on a portfolio they told us last quarter was 'granular and well underwritten' with 'no meaningful impact' expected. ACL coverage falling to 1.18% from 1.26% while NPAs jumped 20% is the number that worries me most heading into Q2. My view changes if Q2 shows the $30M+ past-due book actually clears as promised and the core/brokered deposit breakdown reappears; if it doesn't, this starts to look like a bank quietly under-reserving through an aggressive M&A integration.

The 30-second version

  • Organic growth is quietly running well below the headline growth story
  • EPS 'beat' was accretion-fueled, not organically earned
  • Frontier credit quality promise from last quarter didn't hold, and the deposit mix disclosure disappeared
