Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the loan growth headline, it's that capital flexibility just got squeezed: TCE fell from 9.04% to 8.13% and TBVPS dropped 6.7% on an AOCI mark, and management already told us buybacks will be 'not quite as assertive' from here. The obvious headline, $452M of loan growth and stable 4.30% NIM, is real, but it comes with management's own admission that they're pulling back the pace ('we're not gonna continue that 450 growth rate') and guiding 2027 growth back to mid-single-digit. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's credit capacity: this is the second straight quarter EFSC has missed its own charge-off normalization target, and they said so plainly, 'This obviously did not occur... coming in at 36 basis points annualized', after quietly resetting the bar for 'victory' to 25bps. My view changes if Q4 charge-offs actually land at or below 25bps and the Laguna portfolio closes on the stated Q1 2027 timeline; if either slips again, this becomes a credibility problem, not a one-off.

The 30-second version

  • Capital flexibility is quietly shrinking while everyone watches loan growth
  • The loan growth 'beat' comes with management's own brakes attached
  • Second straight quarter they missed their own charge-off guidance, and said so out loud
