Bottom line
The real story isn't the 38% EPS beat, it's the $425 million of working capital efficiency from inventory management that nobody's talking about while management quietly stops disclosing multi-price penetration metrics. Traffic recovery pushed to H2 with weaker confidence as they pivot to marketing as a growth driver, suggesting the core multi-price strategy needs help. The binding constraint is customer frequency, not store productivity, and their new 'test-and-learn marketing muscle' admits they don't yet know how to solve it. As Creedon said, 'come for the holiday, stay for the everyday' but the data shows customers aren't staying often enough. My view changes if they quantify marketing ROI and restore multi-price penetration disclosure with accelerating growth.

The 30-second version

  • The shrink story is real but inventory management is the bigger sleeper
  • 38% EPS beat masks the traffic problem that won't fix itself
  • Multi-price penetration stalled at 16% while they pivot to marketing as the growth driver
