Bottom line
The sleeper story here is the quiet reversal of HOKA's core investment thesis: Q1 was built on DTC growing 17% while wholesale lagged, but by Q2 management is openly saying 'we'll now expect to see wholesale growth in the U.S. outpace DTC growth', meaning the brand is increasingly reliant on a lower-margin, lower-control channel just as DTC softens. The obvious headline, an EPS beat and raised full-year EPS guide, is largely an IEPA tariff refund pass-through ($0.28 of the $2.31 headline number) layered on top of a revenue miss (+3.5% actual versus the roughly 5% implied guide) and two consecutive brand-level guidance cuts. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's self-imposed promotional discipline colliding with a messier marketplace and execution hiccups: management admits there was still an overhang of Q10 when Q11 was introduced and named three underperforming franchises for the first time, while inventory flipped from down 5% YoY to up 3% YoY. My view changes if Q3 shows the $22M EMEA shipment delay converting cleanly to revenue rather than cancellation, and if HOKA's DTC channel reaccelerates relative to wholesale; absent that, this looks like a brand trading growth quality for margin optics while the buyback math, $637M already spent against an apparent $1 billion full-year target, quietly decelerates capital return into the back half.

The 30-second version

  • HOKA's DTC-led growth thesis quietly flipped to a wholesale bailout
  • EPS 'beat' is a tariff refund pass-through sitting on top of a revenue miss and a guidance cut
  • The buyback metric quietly switched from a rate to an absolute number, and the math doesn't add up cleanly
