Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the record $78B backlog, it's that the backlog is getting longer-dated and less convertible (58% deliverable in 12 months, down from 59%, after three quarters of stability), while book-to-bill has visibly decelerated and management won't give us the number. The obvious headline, record sales and a 96% YoY backlog surge, is real, but the binding constraint is unchanged from last quarter: power & energy production capacity, with management conceding flatly that 'there's no slack in the system'. Margin has now sat near the bottom of the target range for two straight quarters with the real recovery roadmap deferred twice to the January call, and MP&E free cash flow fell roughly 25% sequentially off last quarter's record with zero explanation offered. My view changes if the 10-Q shows the FCF decline is simple working-capital timing tied to the inventory build/drawdown cadence rather than a genuine collections or receivables issue, and if management actually gives a book-to-bill number and a dated margin path on the next call instead of deferring again.

The 30-second version

  • Backlog is getting longer-dated, not just bigger, and that's a conversion problem dressed up as a demand story
  • Record backlog, record quotes, but margin is still 'near the bottom' for the third quarter running
  • FCF quietly fell off a cliff sequentially and nobody asked about it
