Bottom line
The sleeper story is that CAT's own flagship 2030 capacity target just got fuzzier, not firmer: after building the 65GW figure up from precise math in Q1, Joe Creed called it "a round number" this quarter, right as a second consecutive CI dealer-inventory guidance miss and a one-time $392M tariff recovery did the heavy lifting on the headline beat. The obvious headline, a record $20.5B quarter and a $72B backlog, is real, but the binding constraint isn't demand (management insists "no one is slowing down at the moment"), it's whether sales-to-users can actually absorb the inventory CAT just built ahead of a guided >$1B Q4 drawdown. My view changes if Q3 sales-to-users growth decelerates while CI dealer inventory stays elevated, that combination would confirm the inventory build was optics rather than genuine channel-fill for real end demand.

The 30-second version

  • The 65-gigawatt roadmap just got fuzzier, not firmer
  • Record $20.5B quarter, but CI dealer inventory missed guidance for the second straight quarter
  • Margin beat is substantially a one-time tariff recovery, and management told you so
