Bottom line
The sleeper story is backlog math: orders are up 35% and data center orders up 300%, but total backlog only grew from $8B+ to $8.5B+, a sharp deceleration from last quarter's +20% sequential pace, right as the 'data center exit rate' metric management gave every prior quarter conveniently disappeared. The obvious headline, a 15% organic growth beat with EPS up 30%, is real, but it's propped up by a one-time $130M IEPA refund that masked a CSA margin guide cut from 20-21% to about 19%. The binding constraint here isn't hyperscaler demand, it's Carrier's own capacity and price-cost execution: management admits they've 'been constraining ourselves a little bit because of capacity in the non-data center space'. My view changes if Q4 Americas margin actually snaps back toward the low-20s and CSA's FY margin lands at or above the new 19% guide without another one-time benefit.

The 30-second version

  • Backlog growth is quietly stalling even as orders triple, and the one metric that would prove otherwise just vanished from the script
  • The 15% organic growth beat is real, but the margin story underneath it just got worse, not better
  • CSE's 'mid-teen margin' promise just got vaguer right after an impairment, and aftermarket quietly missed its own double-digit target
