Bottom line
The sleeper story is that AutoZone is quietly building a commercial fulfillment network that could be unstoppable: 133 mega hubs growing much faster than the base business, with commercial now 33% of domestic auto parts sales and still accelerating. Everyone will focus on the obvious LIFO charges and tariff impact, but that's missing the point. The binding constraint isn't tariffs or margins, it's physical capacity: they need 167 more mega hubs to hit their target, and each takes time to ramp. Most revealing quote: when asked about mega hub performance, management said they're growing 'much faster' but refused to quantify it, suggesting the numbers are so good they don't want competitors to know. My view changes if commercial same-store sales growth decelerates below 10% or if they stop expanding mega hub count due to capital constraints.

The 30-second version

  • Commercial is quietly becoming their Amazon: 12.5% growth driven by mega hubs that are growing 'much faster' than the base
  • LIFO charges are the real story: $80M this quarter, $120M next quarter, then $80-85M per quarter after that
  • They stopped giving specific commercial margin disclosure and pivoted to 'we like the operating margins' when pressed
