Bottom line
The sleeper story is that DIY traffic has been stuck at negative 3.6% for three straight quarters despite massive inflation tailwinds and tax refunds, suggesting a structural demand problem management won't acknowledge. Yes, commercial is finally working with double-digit growth, but they're achieving it through massive capital deployment with returns they suspiciously won't quantify beyond 'better than our original forecasts.' The binding constraint isn't weather or Mexico; it's that they're burning $1.6 billion in CapEx annually to buy growth while per-store productivity deteriorates and LIFO charges eat them alive. Management's quote that stores are 'exceeding our pro forma expectations' is meaningless without numbers. My view changes if DIY traffic turns positive without a massive promotion or if they actually disclose mega hub IRRs above 20%.

The 30-second version

  • The weather excuse is masking a DIY traffic problem that's getting worse, not better
  • Commercial is finally working but mega hub returns are exceeding 'conservative' models by undisclosed amounts
  • LIFO charges are eating the business alive while management pretends it's just accounting noise
