Bottom line
The sleeper story is that APLD is intentionally slowing its highest-growth business because the accounting treatment would destroy their already terrible earnings; they literally can't afford to grow. The market sees a 400MW hyperscaler win, but after 5+ months of negotiation, management can't say when the customer actually wants the facility, a massive red flag for deal certainty. The binding constraint isn't demand or execution, it's that their financing structure makes growth toxic to the income statement. Management admitted: 'we don't want to keep adding a lot with the capital lease structure.' My view changes if they actually close the GPU debt facility with normalized depreciation, but they've been promising that for two quarters now.

The 30-second version

  • The GPU financing structure is quietly killing this business: 2-year depreciation on 5-year assets created a $45M adjusted net loss despite positive EBITDA
  • The 400MW hyperscaler LOI is real but the timeline keeps slipping: 'north of 90%' complete means 60+ days more
  • They're intentionally slowing GPU deployments despite $110M run rate because they can't afford the accounting hit
