Bottom line
The sleeper story is APLD morphing into a power company through Base Electron while everyone focuses on data center leases; this 1.2GW natural gas plant with a 10% equity stake could be worth more than the current data center business by 2028. The market sees revenue acceleration with the $126M quarter, but strip out $73M of 5% margin fit-out revenue and the core business only generated $53M, well below the implied $100M quarterly run-rate from their contracts. The binding constraint isn't demand but their inability to close new hyperscaler deals; they've been in 'advanced negotiations' for 6 months with zero new contracts while burning $200M cash despite claiming $44M adjusted EBITDA. Management admitted 'even if it were very easy for me to sign more with current customers, my preference right now is to continue to diversify,' which is code for new customer acquisition is harder than expected. My view changes if they sign 2+ investment-grade leases in Q4 at similar economics to prove this isn't a two-customer story.

The 30-second version

  • The Base Electron power play is the real story here, not the lease signings
  • Revenue inflection finally hits with $126.6M (+139% QoQ), but it's mostly low-margin fit-out services
  • They paused South Dakota and are being unusually cagey about hyperscaler negotiations
