Bottom line
The sleeper story is Amazon transforming into a power utility - 3.8 gigawatts added in 12 months with plans to double again by 2027. Everyone sees the 20% AWS growth, but the real story is infrastructure at utility scale. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's power capacity - as Jassy said, 'as fast as we're adding capacity, we're monetizing it.' The grocery perishables bet is working with customers returning twice as often, but free cash flow deteriorating to $14.8B from massive capex will test patience. My view changes if the $125B+ annual capex doesn't translate to sustained 20%+ AWS growth or if power constraints persist past 2026.

The 30-second version

  • AWS is quietly becoming a power company with 3.8 gigawatts added in 12 months
  • The grocery perishables bet is working: they're already a top 3 U.S. grocer at $100B+ GMV
  • Trainium2 is fully subscribed and multibillion-dollar, but they need Trainium3 to broaden beyond 'small number of very large customers'
