Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Amazon has quietly become potentially the world's third-largest data center chip company with a $50B equivalent run rate, betting the company's entire margin structure on Tranium beating NVIDIA. The Street sees 36.7% AWS growth and celebrates, but the $496B backlog growing triple digits means they're selling 2-3x faster than they can deploy, creating a massive execution risk nobody's pricing in. The binding constraint isn't demand; it's their ability to deploy $200B+ in annual CapEx efficiently while memory costs are 'skyrocketing' and they're locking in five-year pricing. Management claims Tranium will save 'tens of billions of dollars of CapEx each year' but conspicuously stopped updating the $225B commitment number from Q1. My view changes if they start disclosing receivables again and give actual utilization rates; the fact they won't is telling you everything.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: AWS chips business is already $50B run rate if sold externally, making Amazon potentially the third largest data center chip company globally
  • AWS acceleration to 36.7% looks incredible but the backlog tripling YoY means they're selling faster than they can deploy
  • Management stopped disclosing DSO and started giving absolute dollar increases instead of growth rates for key metrics
