Bottom line
The sleeper story is that ERCOT's Batch Zero process, the single biggest swing factor in AEP's Texas growth story, has now slipped from an April target to an August 7 target to a December 10 filing , and management is framing a four-plus month delay as essentially immaterial. The obvious headline is the $100B five-year capital plan and 9-11% EPS growth raise , which the Street will cheer, but the real constraint is financing discipline: AEP is funding this acceleration with only a 24% equity ratio versus the 30-40% industry norm , just above its 13% FFO-to-debt downgrade threshold . Trevor Mihalik's own words, 'we want to be as conservative as we possibly can with shareholder equity' , is the tell: management is choosing dilution avoidance over balance sheet cushion at exactly the moment rate base is nearly doubling. My view changes if the December 10 ERCOT filing confirms a materially lower eligible-load number than the 45GW Texas claim, or if AEP is forced into a larger-than-planned equity raise next quarter to protect the FFO-to-debt buffer.

The 30-second version

  • ERCOT Batch Zero quietly slipped four-plus months, and management is burying it under the $100B headline
  • The $100B capex plan and 9-11% growth rate raise is real, but it's being funded with the lightest equity ratio in the plan's history
  • PJM governance risk and the 13GW secured-turbine figure both vanished from the script this quarter
