Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the beat-and-raise, it's that the take rate 'upside' promised in Q1 quietly became 'flat' in Q2 because new verticals like hotels and services are being grown with customer incentives rather than pure monetization, while the flagship hotel cross-sell stat mysteriously dropped from 55% to 35% with zero explanation. The obvious headline, revenue +17% to $3.6B with accelerating nights/seats, is real, but the binding constraint is translating hotel/services engagement into incremental take rate without buying growth via incentives. Chesky's own words capture the gap between vision and proof: AI search is 'extraordinary' yet 'we'll have to see how it converts'. My view changes if Airbnb discloses an actual hotel GBV dollar figure and reconciles the 55%-to-35% cross-sell metric next quarter; until then, treat the new-business narrative as mostly narrative, not binder.

The 30-second version

  • The take rate 'upside' from Q1 quietly became 'flat' in Q2, and management told you why
  • Beat-and-raise on every headline metric, but the flagship hotel cross-sell number got cut in half
  • Loyalty and flights, teased hard in Q1, vanished entirely from the Q2 script and Q&A
