Bottom line
The sleeper story is that YTD EBITDA growth decelerated from 10% to 9% underneath a quarter management is calling a 'record,' right as they're asking the Street to underwrite a 16% CAGR comp-plan ceiling they can't yet bridge with specifics. The obvious headline, Socrates phase 2 online ahead of schedule and Momentum integrating with 'no surprises after the first two months of ownership', is real and well-executed, but it's masking a binding constraint: incremental power-project funding capacity has been stuck at '$2 billion' for two straight quarters despite the acquisition closing and earnings growing, and financing costs on the JV structure that's supposed to fund the next wave are already drifting higher off the 6.35% cap. The most revealing moment of the call was CFO John Porter conceding that the $5.9 billion equipment-commitment disclosure is 'murky' and that there's 'not a real strong connection' between it and the 6GW+ backlog, exactly the kind of answer substitution that shows up when visibility into forward economics is worse than the headline suggests. My view changes if next quarter they either (a) quantify the equipment-to-sanctioned-capacity conversion rate with real numbers, or (b) show the leverage capacity figure actually expanding as EBITDA compounds; until then, I'd treat the 16% CAGR aspiration as narrative, not a binder.

The 30-second version

  • YTD EBITDA growth quietly decelerated from 10% to 9% even as headlines scream 'record quarter'
  • The obvious headline is 'record Q3 EBITDA + Momentum/Socrates delivered on time,' but the real story is financing capacity for the next leg isn't growing
  • Management called its own $5.9B equipment-commitment disclosure 'murky' and refused to connect it to the 6GW+ opportunity set
