Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Williams just raised its long-term CAGR target to 11%+ almost entirely via the Momentum Midstream bolt-on and two new pipeline projects, while organic segment growth quietly decelerated across Transmission/Gulf, Storage, and West versus last quarter's much hotter print. The obvious headline, a guidance raise plus a clever Blackstone-backed JV that preserves balance sheet capacity, is real and well-engineered, but the binding constraint is disclosure discipline: three metrics that were specific last quarter (EPS growth %, Sequent $227M, $7.3B capex) went vague or missing this quarter, right as management told investors 'Williams really is firing on all cylinders'. My view changes if next quarter restores the specific capex, EPS, and backlog figures and shows Transmission/Gulf growth reaccelerating back toward the mid-teens; if those metrics stay vague or absent for a second straight quarter, that's a real earnings-quality tell, not a one-off.

The 30-second version

  • The CAGR raise is M&A-funded, not organic acceleration
  • Guidance raise and JV look clean on the surface, but three disclosure items quietly vanished
  • The 6 gigawatt power backlog figure that framed last quarter's entire bull case has disappeared
