Bottom line
The sleeper story here is not the loan growth, it is what UMB stopped talking about: the entire private-credit/NDFI disclosure apparatus built last quarter to kill a market scare, plus the provision dollar figure, neither was repeated on this call. The obvious headline is another strong quarter, 12.6% annualized loan growth on record $2.6B production, but that masks an opex guidance miss ($398M actual vs. $383M guided) and a new, unexplained $4.1M operational-losses line. The binding constraint is deposits, not loan demand: average deposits were flat for a second straight quarter even as management dodged a direct question on where the loan-to-deposit ratio is headed, retreating to 'if you look at page 40' instead of a number. The most revealing line of the call was Mariner Kemper's own: 'I wish I had something exciting and different to tell you, John, but it's a business as usual', which is candid but also a tell that visibility hasn't changed and there's nothing new underwriting the next leg of growth beyond trend extrapolation. My view changes if the Q3 10-Q shows the NDFI/private-credit exposure or the provision build materially worse than last quarter's benign disclosures implied, that would explain exactly why management didn't bring it up this time.

The 30-second version

  • The private credit disclosure machine just went dark
  • Another 'beat' quarter, but opex guidance was actually missed
  • Deposits are flat for a second straight quarter, but the 'machine' talk got vaguer, not more specific
