Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Uber is flipping to insurance leverage for the first time since COVID, with hundreds of millions in savings driving price cuts that are already accelerating trip growth in L.A. and San Francisco. Yes, AV trips grew 10x, but as Dara admits, 'we added 50x the trips on the Uber platform this last year than the entire AV industry added.' The real binding constraint isn't AV deployment - it's the tradeoff between insurance savings and margin expansion. Management chose growth over margins, which could pressure profitability if elasticity disappoints. Most telling quote: 'We underestimated the amount of impact AI tools could have' - they already blew their 2026 AI budget after Q1. My view changes if insurance leverage stops flowing to trip acceleration or if AI spending spirals without measurable productivity gains.

The 30-second version

  • THE SLEEPER: Uber flipping to insurance LEVERAGE for first time since COVID
  • AV trips grew 10x YoY but still irrelevant to financials
  • AI spending already blown through 2026 budget after Q1
