Bottom line
The sleeper story is that TripAdvisor's AI optionality, the narrative that justified a chunk of the long-term multiple, quietly regressed from 'conversion already among the highest of any channel' to 'nothing to announce today' in a single quarter. Everyone will write about the $700 million fork sale as a clean simplification win, but the real headline is that experiences bookings growth decelerated from 11% to 5% and GBV growth from 13% to just 3%, with consumer trade-down to lower-priced inventory now an explicit, self-acknowledged driver rather than a one-off weather event. The binding constraint isn't demand generation, it's unit economics: marketing costs are up 500bps of revenue while management is actively discounting to keep volume growth alive, and the buyback has now sat dormant for two straight quarters despite 'commitment' language. My view changes if Q3 actuals beat the newly 'prudent' guidance range and marketing-as-%-of-revenue stabilizes without further ABV erosion; if instead Q3 revenue prints at the low end of -2% with continued discounting, this stops looking like macro noise and starts looking like a structural margin problem in the core growth segment.

The 30-second version

  • The AI monetization story quietly died this quarter while everyone watches the fork sale
  • Fork sale headline masks a real deceleration in the core experiences engine
  • The denominator switch and the paused buyback are the tells
