Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Targa's blowout quarter is partly a trading desk story: $250M of H1 marketing optimization gains that management itself says won't repeat are propping up a 38% YoY EBITDA headline built on a guidance range that was never actually raised this quarter, just reaffirmed toward the top. The obvious headline, record Permian volumes and five plants under construction, is real and bullish, but the binding constraint isn't demand, it's extended 18-24 month lead times on electrical infrastructure and compression gear that management insists 'hasn't affected our ability to perform in any way' even as the next Midland plant sits in 'evaluating the timing' purgatory with no committed date. My view changes if Q3 marketing margin reverses by less than guided (bullish, means the windfall has more structural legs than disclosed) or if the next Midland plant goes six-plus months without an FID (bearish, confirms the Delaware/Midland growth split is a real capacity allocation problem, not just sequencing noise).

The 30-second version

  • The $250M marketing windfall is doing the heavy lifting on the 'record' quarter
  • Guidance 'raise' to the top end is really just reaffirming the same range they already set in Q1
  • The explicit 'low double-digit' Permian volume growth guidance metric quietly disappeared
