Bottom line
The sleeper story is that AT&T quietly stopped giving you the one data cut that would prove core-book convergence and ARPU trends are still healthy, right in the quarter that Lumen-driven convergence gains (+250bps) could be propping up an otherwise flattish blended convergence number and fiber ARPU decline tripled to -4%. The obvious headline, best quarter in four years on subs, service revenue, and EBITDA growth, is real, but the binding constraint isn't demand, it's device-financing working capital, which Desroches now explicitly flags as a multi-year cash drag being funded by capex efficiency savings rather than debt paydown. The most revealing line on the call wasn't a number at all: asked about agentic AI monetization, Stankey said "I don't pretend to know exactly how that's going to play out", a sharp step down from last quarter's detailed VPN-style pricing framework. My view changes if management restores the ex-Lumen convergence and ARPU breakouts next quarter and they show core-book acceleration rather than Lumen-driven mix shift; until then, treat this as a good quarter with a disclosure quality downgrade baked in.

The 30-second version

  • The convergence breakout quietly disappeared, and that's the tell
  • Beat-and-raise headline masks an EPS raise that's an accounting artifact, not operations
  • The AI monetization story regressed from a pricing framework to 'I don't pretend to know'
