Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the 300M subscriber milestone or the 15% revenue print, it's that the ad revenue growth rate, disclosed every prior quarter, simply vanished this quarter, replaced by advertiser-count and automated-mix metrics that flatter the trend without confirming it. The obvious headline is acceleration everywhere, but underneath it, operating income fell ~95M€ sequentially and FCF declined even as revenue grew, with much of the beat traced to one-time items like the DST Canada accrual reversal. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's conversion: management openly admitted to throttling free-tier growth to force monetization, stating "this strategy carefully increases friction in our free service with a goal of driving higher user conversion and revenue growth down the line", which also conveniently makes any future MAU miss look intentional rather than demand-driven. My view changes if next quarter they restore the ad revenue growth rate disclosure and show the friction strategy actually lifting conversion/ARPU in the affected emerging markets; if both stay opaque, this quarter's clean beat starts looking like a one-time dressing on a decelerating ads business.

The 30-second version

  • The ad revenue growth rate just vanished from the deck
  • Revenue accelerated to 15% and subs crossed 300M, but operating income and FCF both fell sequentially
  • Management just admitted to deliberately throttling MAU growth
