Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the 17.4% EPS beat, it's that ACL coverage of non-performing loans fell from 200% to 184% while two brand-new problem credits surfaced the very quarter the old specialty CRE relationship finally got cleaned up, a whack-a-mole pattern dressed up as 'the company's underlying earnings power'. The obvious headline, strongest loan origination quarter in years at $312M, obscures that net loan growth was just $35M, the pipeline shrank 18% to $159M, and a C&I client 'outgrown us' and left for a bigger bank. The binding constraint is competitive capacity on the commercial lending side, not demand; management is sourcing strong gross originations but losing an increasing share to payoffs and bigger competitors, which caps net growth below the implied run-rate needed to hit their reaffirmed mid-single-digit FY26 target. My view changes if next quarter shows NPL coverage rebuilding toward 200%+ without another one-time recovery propping up the provision line, and if the pipeline reaccelerates back above $190M.

The 30-second version

  • The EPS beat is a credit-recovery story dressed up as 'normalized earnings power'
  • Loan growth engine is quietly decelerating under a 'strongest quarter in years' headline
  • Credit coverage is thinning even as the old problem loan gets cleaned up
