Bottom line
McDonald's is essentially buying traffic with a $90M+ EVM subsidy that ends in Q1 2026, creating a looming cliff for franchisee economics. While management frames this as value leadership, it's actually a desperate attempt to bridge an unsustainable gap between consumer price sensitivity and input cost inflation. The binding constraint isn't demand but the math: 20%+ beef inflation can't be offset by 15% discounts without destroying margins. Kempczinski's quote that franchisees will continue EVM post-subsidy because 'any move backward would actually be self-defeating' sounds more like hope than analysis. My view changes if they show specific traffic incrementality rates that justify the discounting or if beef inflation moderates significantly.

The 30-second version

  • EVM price war is a $90M trap disguised as a value fix
  • Beef inflation at 20%+ in Europe signals margin compression cycle just starting
  • Beverage test metrics disappeared after 'exceeding expectations' claim
