Bottom line
The sleeper story is supply constraints masking a margin crisis-Intel's gross margins are collapsing despite being capacity-constrained, which should never happen in a healthy business. The obvious headline about 18A shipping and foundry progress is real, but the binding constraint isn't capacity, it's cost structure. Dave's admission that '34.5% is by no means an acceptable level of gross margins' reveals they're prioritizing revenue mix over profitability. The $37B cash position isn't for growth-it's runway to fix fundamental economics. My view changes if Q2 gross margins expand meaningfully as 18A yields improve and supply constraints ease.

The 30-second version

  • Supply constraints are masking a structural margin problem-they're prioritizing server mix to hide client cost structure deterioration
  • 18A is shipping but burning cash-early ramp costs are killing gross margins while yields need another full year to reach 'industry acceptable' levels
  • Foundry customer commitments pushed to 2H-the $30B+ cash raise was to buy time, not fund growth
