Bottom line
Intel just made their biggest strategic bet since Pat Gelsinger: committing to 14A high-volume production in 2028 without announced customers, essentially betting the company that foundry will work this time. The server business is on fire with 59% growth, but they're admitting to leaving billions on the table due to substrate bottlenecks, not wafer capacity, which means throwing CapEx at fabs won't solve the problem. The suspicious part: client margins collapsed 700bps on mysterious 'inventory charges' they refuse to quantify, while OCF magically surged 536% with no explanation. 'We make the decision in Q2 to fully committed to high-volume ramp in 2028' might be the most important sentence Lip-Bu has said. My view changes if 14A customer announcements don't materialize by Q4.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Intel just committed to high-volume 14A production in 2028, ending the 'if' question on foundry viability
  • The obvious: Server CPU revenue up 59% YoY as AI drives CPU/GPU parity, but they're leaving $1B+ on the table
  • The red flag: Client margins collapsed 700bps QoQ despite 15% revenue growth due to mysterious 'inventory charges'
