Bottom line
The sleeper story is that IDEXX just cut its own margin-expansion target for the year (70-90bps down to 50-70bps) while the market cheers a revenue and EPS raise, and comparable operating margin growth has already decelerated from +110bps to +60bps intra-year. The obvious headline, 10% organic growth and a beat-and-raise quarter, is real, but it's increasingly an international story (14% growth, accelerating) papering over a decelerating US core (9.6%, visits down 1.8% and getting worse). The binding constraint isn't demand, it's disclosure discipline: when pushed on CancerDx recurring usage, management flatly said they don't split that out further, and when pushed on 2027 Covet dilution, the CFO pivoted to managing it as a portfolio rather than giving a number. My view changes if next quarter they either (a) move the InView revenue-per-analyzer range off $3,500-$5,500 now that FNA is fully launched, or (b) give a specific 2027 operating-margin bps impact from Covet; either would convert today's narrative into a binder and materially improve conviction in the 2027 setup.

The 30-second version

  • The margin guide got quietly cut while everyone celebrates the raise
  • Beat-and-raise headline masks a US-core that's losing share of the growth story to international
  • Two flagship metrics quietly stopped telling you anything useful
