Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the GAAP EPS miss, it's that Great Southern just admitted to a multi-period hedge accounting failure requiring a $3.5 million AOCI-to-earnings reclassification, and not one analyst on the call asked about it. The loan book is shrinking faster, not slower ($108.4M down YTD vs. $49.1M at the Q2 mark), and management's own words on visibility got more pessimistic, not less: "we have some visibility, but it's probably a whole lot more limited than what you guys think". The binding constraint is loan demand, not capital or credit, forcing management into a sub-100bps leveraged carry trade on $400M of agency MBS just to keep NII dollars growing while margin compresses. My view changes if the Q4 10-K/10-Q shows the hedge issue was isolated to a single swap/period with no broader control implications, and if the new securities spread holds up as FHLB funding costs continue to climb.

The 30-second version

  • The real growth driver this quarter wasn't lending, it was a $400M leveraged bond trade
  • GAAP EPS fell to $1.27 from $1.56 a year ago, but the real story is a self-identified hedge accounting failure, not a one-off
  • Loan shrinkage is accelerating, not stabilizing, and visibility is worse than the Street assumes
