Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the branch closures, it's a loan book that contracted $148.9 million in a single quarter after management told us last quarter that loan growth was finally stabilizing, and Rex Copeland admitted outright that continued paydowns will pressure NII dollars even if margin holds. The obvious headline is the EPS miss ($1.43 vs $1.72 YoY) tied to one-time branch-consolidation charges, but reframe that: core expenses ($36.1M) are already climbing on their own, and the margin 'win' to 3.76% leaned on a second straight quarter of a one-time interest recovery management itself says 'may vary going forward.' The binding constraint is competitive pricing pressure on both sides of the balance sheet combined with a payoff cycle management openly cannot forecast ('that's why we don't give guidance, Damon'). My view changes if Q3 origination data shows payoffs normalizing and the efficiency ratio reappears in the 10-Q at a level consistent with Q1's 62.85%; if instead loan balances keep shrinking and the efficiency ratio has deteriorated further, this is a slow-bleed NII story the Street hasn't priced in yet.

The 30-second version

  • The loan book is shrinking faster than anyone wants to admit, and margin 'expansion' is partly a mirage
  • EPS fell to $1.43 from $1.72 YoY on branch-closure charges, but the real constraint is a balance sheet that's melting
  • The efficiency ratio vanished right when expenses jumped
