Bottom line
The market will cheer 24% consolidated growth and 82% cloud growth tonight, but the sleeper story is that Alphabet just became a debt and equity issuer to keep funding the AI buildout, with debt up roughly 6x to ~$100B and a new ATM equity program for SBC taxes, while free cash flow flipped negative this quarter. The binding constraint is not demand, it's compute supply, and management admits it explicitly: 'we're still in a supply constraint environment... we've said this now for multiple quarters in a row', with the fix (costly third-party bridging capacity) now guided to compress Cloud margins next quarter. Watch what disappeared as closely as what was disclosed: exact net income/EPS figures, the FY2026 CapEx range, Waymo's ride count, and Gemini Enterprise's growth rate all vanished from this call. My view changes if Q3 shows cloud margin actually holding flat despite the bridging-capacity cost, or if management reinstates explicit FY2026/2027 CapEx guidance next quarter; either would suggest the capital-structure stress is more optics than substance.

The 30-second version

  • Google quietly became a credit/equity issuer to fund AI, not just a cash machine
  • Cloud +82% and backlog to $514B looks like a blowout, but the real story is margin now rolling over
  • Net income and EPS lost their numbers, and so did Waymo's ride count
