Bottom line
The sleeper story: First Solar just admitted domestic manufacturing doesn't save on logistics, with Ohio-to-California trucking now costing the same as Asia-to-California shipping, obliterating a key reshoring thesis. Yes, they beat Q2 EBITDA by 29%, but that's driven by an $89M tariff benefit that won't repeat. The binding constraint is their 41GW backlog complexity, with varying domestic content requirements creating an allocation nightmare they can't optimize. Mark's tell: 'We therefore continually balance and refine our module supply and demand allocation.' My view changes if Section 232 creates a 40-cent floor, making their stranded Malaysia capacity suddenly valuable.

The 30-second version

  • South Carolina finishing line delay to mid-2027 is actually bullish: enables earlier CURE integration and better economics
  • Record Q2 sales of $1.06B but the real story: domestic freight costs now equal international shipping from Asia
  • Management quietly admitted 41GW of 45GW backlog has 'some form' of domestic content requirement, varying wildly in stringency
