Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the 28% EPS beat, it's that FedEx quietly downgraded its AI/data-center vertical from a quantified 'double digit revenue growth' metric to a single customer anecdote about aircraft engine moves, and let the MD-11 fleet, last quarter's headline operational risk, go completely unmentioned with peak weeks away. The obvious headline is a guidance raise to $18-$18.60 on strong B2B momentum, but the binding constraint is domestic margin: it fell 20bps this quarter and is explicitly guided 'down moderately' again in Q4, driven by a trucking labor cost pressure management calls 'transitory' while admitting it's tied to structural regulatory tightening. As Claude put it on the CY27 bridge, 'I'm obviously not here to give an exact number...we're still working through that plan', a far cry from last year's fully quantified forward-year walkthrough. My view changes if next quarter's call restores a quantified AI/data-center growth rate, gives a specific MD-11 fleet status, or shows US Domestic margin actually inflecting positive rather than just 'improving' on a profit-dollar basis while margin keeps slipping.

The 30-second version

  • AI/data center growth quietly went from a quantified metric to a customer anecdote
  • Headline beat masks a domestic margin stall that's now explicitly guided lower
  • The MD-11 fleet, last quarter's marquee operational risk, received no update this call
