Bottom line
The sleeper story is Ford Energy: management is simultaneously claiming its best-ever commercial traction (80%+ of 2028 capacity contracted or in late-stage talks) while explicitly refusing to disclose the backlog dollar figure until next year, a disclosure regression that should make you discount the headline percentage. The obvious headline, a Q3 EBIT beat and a raised guidance floor to $10.5-11.0B, is real but masks a Ford Pro segment whose EBIT dollars were flat sequentially despite 'solid quarter' framing, and a services business that quietly swapped hard subscriber growth numbers for an un-denominated '10% of revenue' claim. The binding constraint right now is disclosure discipline and supply-chain readiness: F-150 days supply stays stuck below target for a second straight quarter, and the next-gen F-150 downtime is explicitly expected to be offset only by new Oakville capacity. Dave Carroll's own words say it best: 'we're actually not talking about backlog today', a strange thing to say about your most-hyped new business right as you tell investors demand remains very strong. My view changes if Ford either restores subscriber-level disclosure in Q4 or provides an actual Ford Energy backlog dollar figure before year-end; until then, treat the Energy and services narratives as unverified upside, not banked EBIT.

The 30-second version

  • Ford Energy just stopped telling you the number that matters
  • Headline beat is real but Ford Pro's 'solid quarter' is flat-dollar, not growth
  • The subscriber metrics that proved the services flywheel just vanished
